House of Flora
Flora McLean is the lead designer of fashion label House of Flora. She trained in Fashion Design at The Royal College of Art in London. "House of Flora", specialises in avant-garde headwear for the catwalk / fashion campaigns and collectors. This inventive mind dreams up hats that are made in an unconventional style proposing ideas for the head as art. Flora works in a variety of different materials; PVC, Perspex, felt, leather, wood veneer and nylon. Her ideas for hats have now expanded to include a commercial range of fashion jewellery. This has been well received well buy both buyers and press. Flora has established a reputation as an innovator and style director in this field and many of her concepts have been mimicked by high street stores and written about in mainstream as well as high-end press. Kate Moss offered to back her campaign for free! Grazia 2008. Her ideas are driven by structures in nature as well as textures from architecture and new processes in manufacture. Flora is influenced by strong geometry and historical figures as well as concepts in modern art. The fashion jewellery and hat range is shown in London and Paris this is designed to co ordinate with the headwear and be seen as a total vision. These pieces are available in leading fashion stores worldwide.
Flora has taught fashion at Central and Saint Martins School of Art and The Royal College of Art. She is now a senior fashion lecturer and Program leader of Fashion Design, Styling and Promotion at Middlesex University in London. Flora is a travelling lecturer, representing the British Council in Poland and Kazakhstan. She is a co- editor of an art magazine Fash n Riot. This is sold in London, Paris, Zurich and Tokyo.
Working closely with other fashion designers she travels with her designs to Paris, Milan and New York. Many of her designs have been inspired by architectural forms and features and have been worn by Kate moss for Paris Vogue, and photographed by all the leading image makers, Paolo Roversi, Nick Knight and Arthur Elgort amongst others. The press catalogue for House of Flora is impressive with Italian and French Vogue covers featuring her work. Flora has an ongoing collaborative project with top hairstylist Neil Moodie to create a new invention,Iconic Heads, these are hair-style hats made in felt, plastic , veneer and other fabrics.These striking styles have created a sensation and have been on a world tour to Collette in Paris and Bumble and Bumble in New York and Liberty in London.
For Spring summer 2009 Flora will show her work in Paris with fellow Avant garde designer Husam El Odeh at Le Fridge Gallerie Eric Mircher, 26 Rue Saint Claude between 3rd and 7th October 2008. Flora will be presenting the collection Dress no 1 . As well as being an actual functional dress, this is also the name of the film made to publicise this seasons collection. The film features current work and previous pieces and of course “the dress”. Flora has been working with director Justin Anderson, Pony Boy to make a short film for Show Studio about the work that she produces.This has been well received as a truly modern timeless piece or art direction. The dress is a printed cotton day dress with pleating and strong lines and handmade buttons. Also present will be HOF no 1 specs, these are limited edition Sunglasses alongside the signature hats, collars and cuffs.
