Jacob Kimmie
Profile
Jacob Kimmie was born in South Africa in 1973 to family whose roots are Dutch, German, French-Creole, Indonesian and English. He was 11 years old when he made his first dress for a friend who had entered a beauty pageant. He crafted it from a fluorescent yellow plastic meat-packer's suit that his father had bought him to wear for the two hour journeys to school during the stormy summer months. In 1995, he was nominated by the Clothing Federation of South Africa (CLOFED) as the South African representative to an international clothing design conference held in Turkey.
Jacob Kimmie's collections are deeply personal, private and obscure and contain ambiguous references. Collections reflect his innate ability to narrate profound artistic, historical and social paradoxes in a clear and crisp way defunct of experimentation.
