Paul Smith

It was never Paul Smith’s intention to become a fashion designer, but a short two-years after getting the idea from some close friends he opened his first shop in Nottingham in 1970. By 1976 Paul showed his first menswear collection in Paris under the Paul Smith label. Within 20 years of his introduction to fashion Paul Smith had established himself as the pre-eminent British designer.

Paul Smith Black combines luxurious tailoring with directional and modern separates.  Effortlessly identified by its witty twist on desirable classics; the essence of Black lies in its confident, youthful attitude and contemporary style.

This season the collection celebrates traditional British heritage and takes particular inspiration from the time-honoured outdoor pursuits associated with it. Traditional fabrics such as checks and jacquards are mixed with bold and exciting colour. Strong outerwear is layered over soft, feminine textures; fluffy jewel-bright angora knits and fine chiffons add a charming twist to heavy winter tweeds, herringbones and graphic tonal stripes.

The silhouettes of the season are contrasting in shape; a soft, cocoon outline is created with the use of fluid jerseys and pleated silks. The leaner, more defined outline, where the waist is key, is seen in sleek, structured tailoring styles that fit and flatter.

Embellishment is simple and elegant; luxurious pieces are highlighted with uniquely placed adornment or all-over sequins. A long silk dress is decorated with delicate chains which criss-cross the neckline and the cocoon coat has a mesh-covered rhinestone collar.

Signature quirks are seen throughout; interesting button & stitch details, brightly lined yokes, irregular colour pinstripes and bow pleating remain in keeping with the playful Paul Smith DNA.

Colour is warm and bright with vibrant tones of red, orange and hot pink highlighted against charcoal, black and blue. The prints of the season incorporate these colours into witty and abstract designs.
